AUBUSSON, THE PASSION OF THE TAPESTRY

Synopsis:
Aubusson, a village in the middle of the Limousin has been for centuries the world capital of tapestry of basse-lisse.
The craftsmen savoir-faire enabled this town to gain such fame so it can work with big institutions such as le Mobilier National and public orders.
Around the second world war, thanks to the technical revolution, the dynamism and the sense of communication of Jean Lurçat and many other names of contemporary art (Gromaire, le Corbusier, Braque….)the tapestry art and industry found a new lease of life and got into Musées of Contemporary Art and the most modern dwelling places.
Even though the traditional tapestry professions have survived, the creators and the craftsmen tend to disappear.
